POKEMON GO

Pokémon Go portrays family life as ‘shared loneliness’ – this is the one thing the different generations have in common. The play’s protagonists are a middle-aged couple who, on the eighth floor of a prefabricated block of flats in a small rural town, are waiting for a miracle to happen so they can finally leave this place behind. Selling their parents’ house might offer hope of change, but the grandmother, with her energetic resilience, has no intention whatsoever of bringing her life to a close.

With unyielding stubbornness, she dispenses her perceived truths without the slightest regard for anyone but herself. She lives in a past as solid as concrete (but! one need only think of the grandfather’s unread correspondence that harbours a wealth of secrets). The couple long to escape the life they have built for themselves through long struggles; a life that no longer offers them any prospects, for everything that once bound them together has worn thin.
