CANCAN ON THE GLASS FLOOR

In Krisztina Tóth’s stories, ordinary people appear in ordinary moments of their lives—children play store with old coins, a retired history teacher draws a number at the post office, a harlequin ladybug appears in the garden, a judo coach takes his students to the theater, two former classmates run into each other at the bus stop—and magic happens: a piece of their lives is revealed—their past, their future, their possibilities, and their impossibilities. Situations and fates that are funny, ridiculous, sad, painful, or even tragic. The stories in *Can-Can on the Glass Floor* are set in Hungary—in a modern hospital, a school, a village, a city—amidst the current political and economic conditions, yet Krisztina Tóth takes such a leap from reality that she remains true to the truth: she expands this space and time, and sheds light on tiny details in such a way that the whole picture emerges. And we cry and laugh in turn.

“One of the author’s greatest strengths remains her powers of observation. Few contemporary Hungarian writers are able to observe people as precisely and yet as compassionately as she does.” (Bak Róbert, ekultura.hu, June 15 2026)
